In September, One Economy welcomed more than 300 guests to our annual gala at the San Francisco Design Center. In addition to the opportunity to reconnect with supporters and celebrate this year's successes, we honored winners of the 2008 Lisa Sullivan Horizons Award and the Metcalfe Digital Opportunity Award.

This year's Lisa Y. Sullivan Horizon Award winner, Tyre Ellison, is an 18-year old graduating senior from San Francisco, California.  Tyre has been an exceptional leader and shown dedication to serving his community.

In memory of Lisa Sullivan, a founding One Economy board member and advocate for urban youth, this award honors exceptional youth who use technology to transform low-income communities.

Tyre has been a Digital Connector for three years. He has served his community by distributing computers, providing one-on-one technology education, and assisting community centers with computer installation and training.

"Tyre has been responsible and compassionate on serving his community," says Leo Sosa, Digital Connectors program manager. "Understanding the collaboration of the Digital Connectors with local community centers has made Tyre more aware of how crucial technology is in today's society."

After graduation, Tyre plans to attend college and major in sports management.

Sister Patsy, this year's Metcalfe Digital Opportunity Award winner, is a San Francisco nun and the resident services coordinator for Britton Courts, an affordable housing development in the Visitacion Valley neighborhood. Patsy Harney, dubbed the “cyber-nun” by the Bay Area community, has been a beacon of light and compassion in San Francisco’s roughest neighborhoods for many years.

In honor of Jane Metcalfe, Founder of WIRED magazine and a One Economy Board Member, this award honors leadership in the democratization of technology and the internet.

Sister Patsy began her work in housing as a chaplain and social service assistant at a senior property in San Francisco and later became a service coordinator at a family property. In 1994, Sister Patsy was asked to lead the resident services department in the newly formed Mercy Charities Housing.  Over the course of the next decade, Mercy Housing of California experienced tremendous growth and expansion, and under her leadership, the service department developed.

Over the past six years, Sister Patsy has been an advocate for One Economy’s Digital Connectors Programs as well as our Access Services projects in conjunction with Mercy Housing.  This past semester, Sister Patsy personally recruited, interviewed and selected the Visitacion Valley Digital Connectors.

Sister Patsy has dedicated her life to improving the life-outcomes of residents living in San Francisco’s most violent neighborhoods; in 2008 alone, there have been 14 homicides in Visitacion Valley.  Amidst so much violence, Sister Patsy is trusted and loved, helping her community find critical information, new opportunities and most importantly, hope—all through her championed medium of technology.
